We are often asked during booking consultations “What happens if it rains?” but I don’t recall ever being asked “What happens if it snows?” Of course the recent blanket of snow covering the UK did affect some wedding couples – who really didn’t expect their white wedding to be quite so white!
For us it added an extra dimension and another photo opportunity, the most challenging part was being able to carry the cameras around and stay upright on the untreated ice beneath the snow! For our couples it meant that planning was key to getting the most from their wedding day photography.
The one common thing our couples share – besides a wedding of course – is a keen interest in their wedding photography. To this end we will have planned, mostly by email, the day with them to ensure that every tiny detail which is important to them will be recorded in their images. So when we had snow forecast for Carole and Neils’ wedding at Hazlewood Castle in Yorkshire recently it was another aspect for discussion with Carole & me before the wedding.
Carole was very keen to ensure the comfort of her guests – which included one or two elderly relatives – whilst still retaining the formal group photographs which were important to her. In addition to this she also wanted her images to reflect the stunning architecture of Hazlewood Castle (one of the reasons she had chosen the venue). With this in mind I asked the management of Hazlewood for permission to take the formal photographs in the Chapel where Carole and Neil were having their blessing and discussed appropriate dress ideas with Carole to keep her warm whilst we took some couple portraits outside.
We work very closely with the venue on the day and if necessary during the run up to the wedding. We always make sure that we keep the day running to time and do not over run to the time the wedding party should be sitting down for their wedding breakfast. Venues appreciate this consideration so if we have a request such as the use of the Chapel they are usually very compliant with assisting where necessary. Hazlewood were no exception.
As you can see from the photographs Carole & Neil didn’t freeze outside (but how she kept warm is a secret never to be told!) and did get the pictures they wanted. The Chapel proved to be a stunning, if different, backdrop for their family groups. With it’s stained glass windows the light inside the Chapel, no matter what the time or day or year is always just beautiful. As far as the snow goes – I have never seen Hazlewood Castle look as magical as it did on Carole and Neil’s special day. I am so pleased we had the opportunity to add this wedding to our portfolio – one of our first true white, white weddings! © Sharon Malone www.fnsweddings.com
